Compulsion

Amy and Saffron’s neighbouring apartments reflect their different responses to trauma. Amy’s pale, deliberately spare interior becomes a stage for the life she imagines, with vivid food and costume projecting pleasure, abundance and control. Saffron’s deep-blue apartment turns inward, its layered possessions forming a protective cocoon. The corridor’s saturated red bleeds into both interiors, expressing the desire and unease beneath these carefully maintained worlds. As their relationship becomes consuming, the spaces that offer refuge also suggest confinement. The final retreat of light leaves Amy isolated on the stage she has constructed for herself.
